Home - Tuesday Evening - April 21st

Today, Andy at the machine shop in Cannon Falls called and my parts are ready!

Had someone had a 50cal Magnum Rifle, discharged it on the roof where I worked - pointing it at C Falls, and I left ten minutes later? I would have beat the bullet getting there.

What a nice job. Far, far better than I expected. Absolute quality! The pictures say it all. I really like it when you hand something to another and it comes back perfect.

I gave him an extra $30 for some steaks. Enjoy them Andy!

The head and cylinder have been totally disassembled and shot blasted. Like sandblasting, except B-B's are used. It does not remove much, if any, material except for the gunk.

The stains are leftovers from the corrosion. This affects nothing and after the rings are worn in, no problems. In a perfect world, instead of 0.020" oversized, it could have been 0.040". But, these are stains, not gaps.

The connecting rod with the bush pressed in. And, lapped.

The head. New valves, springs, keepers and he even pressed in new valve seats. Instead of using a grinding wheel to dress the seats, he uses a tungsten carbide fly-cutter. Much nicer when done.

All cleaned up, resurfaced flat and ready to go.

Another nice touch. Andy did not remove material to get things flat again. Just skimmed the surface to clean it. Why is this important? Diesels rely heavily on the gap between the head and the piston for the compression ratio. The more this is close to the factory version, the less issue I have to re-dial that distance again.

To see what it was, go here.

Now, to finish cleaning parts, line them all up and put it all back together.

Later ...
